Vinca Flower

Also known as ‘periwinkle’, these bright tropical beauties like it HOT HOT HOT! They are akin to moss rose in that they can take a hot sunny location no problem. They top out at around 12-15″ high. They prefer to stay above 60 degrees– so best for those in our area that live at a lower elevation.

Cuphea

Want something unique? Cuphea offers something a little out of the ordinary. As a bonus whether open or tubular shaped, these are a hummingbird favored flower. Wonderful filler for combos if you need an upright bushy plant to add a little pizzazz.

Calendula

This cheerful daisy-like flower is also called pot marigold. It is usually in the orange to yellow color range. Ever-blooming during the season if deadheaded. Leave the seeds on at the end of the season and they will re-bloom on their own the next year.

Do you love colorful foliage?  Rex Begonias are a shade loving begonia grown for their fancy, decorative leaves. As with other begonias, they love warm weather.  Wonderful in shady container or basket combinations.   They also make great houseplants.  They love to grow in our warm greenhouses and are usually rooted by late April or Early May.

Heuchera

Low, mounding plants with scalloped leaves in a multitude of colors. (perennials in some parts of the city)  Use these for unique foliage in your annual combos. In addition to the pretty foliage all season, tall wispy flowers are held in swaying wands above the leaves for a month.  Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds.

Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana) is an easy care upright annual for sun.  As a bonus, its simple blossoms are attractive to hummingbirds.  At only a foot tall it will work well in containers or the front of your borders.
